Couture Fashion Week : The Round-Up

Obviously, I didn't  cop a ticket, transport myself to Paris, immerse myself with fashion royalty and drown  in champagne and macaroons, but flicking trough photos from online journals and hogging a pack of digestive biscuits did the trick...and here are my favourites from this year's Spring Couture Fashion week...

1. Margiela - The brand's collection was inspired by the notion of disguise which comes along with modern day use of social media such as Snapchat. What I liked the most is how he used this concept successfully without making the collection look childish or gimmicky - LOOK AT THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE TULLE!? (Images: Dazed and Confused)

2. Alexandre Vauthier - Although the designer sent his models down the catwalk in leather and denim for an cooler take on couture, I loved the dresses which combined shape, texture and embellishement to give the pieces an edge. (Images: WWD)

3. Chanel - As per-usual, Karl Lagerfeld pulled out all the stops to produce an outlandish show. Whilst some of the dresses were a bit too 50s housewife or walking cream-puff for my liking, I really liked the power-suits and more understated dresses. (Images: WWD)

4. Jean Paul Gauliter - Never failing to inject a bit of fun and quirkiness into a collection perfectly curated for the feminine physique, the French designer produced a flurry of different outfits inspired by artwork, the 80s, and even traditional Spanish dress...hit up JPG if you have a couple of grand to spare... Round-up : The Best of NYFW and LFW

New York and London - a cities which are recognised as some of the world's top fashion capitals. As you will know, both NYC and London play hosts to one of four major fashion weeks globally, and the shows and presentations for the spring collection have just come to a close. Nowadays through social media etc. we're able to connect with places all around the world so luckily, due to a bucket-full of Pre-U work, lack of funds and an even smaller number of connections with people 'in the know', we were still able to see the highlights of the week in the comfort of our own homes. Showcasing both new talent and more recognisable designers, NYFW and LFW had a lot of diversity in it's presentation of the Spring/Summer 2016 collections - here are our favourites from the weeks...

NYFW (Arianne's Favourites)

1) Nanette Lepore - I love this collection, as well as the colour/colour scheme and silhouettes are some of my favourites, such as a-line skirts, wide trousers and simple bandeau tops. I am also obsessed with the cheeky slogans and messages which featured on Lepore's designs, as they show that fashion really does not have to be taken seriously.

 2) Sandy Liang - Out of all of the SS16 collections I have seen so far, this is the one of the few which I see as wearable off the out of the show space. Liang stuck to minimal designs, such as culottes and shirts, but added a modern and edgy twist by using small details such as fraying, sheer panels and embellishment, as well as nice textures such as leather, fur and denim.

 3) Alexander Wang - Wang brought out an amazing collection (no surprises there), which was filled with both more sporty and more grungy looks, two things which I really like about the Alexander Wang aesthetic, complete with darker tones and fabrics such as silk and denim.

LFW (Vera's Favourites)
1)  Amanda Wakeley - This collections caught my eye as there is an interesting combination of shapes and textures within Wakeley's designs. I also love the fact that she has included aspects such as low necklines and exposed shirts to add a bit more originality and making the SS16 collection more youthful.

 2) Joseph - I really like the minimalism and simplicity of the monochrome and pale colour palette, yet the different fabric textures, such as plain combined with shinier or sheer elements, make the collection so much more unique.

 3) Paul Smith - The new and revived collection from Paul Smith really caught my eye as I am in love with the combination of contrasting colours and rich hues with eccentric structures, similar to ones of Issey Miyake (one of my favourite designers).

The Best of AW14/15 Campaigns

Unfortunately, Autumn/ Winter will soon be approaching and (if you actually have money, unlike me) that means you will be wanting new attire for the rain and cold weather.Now if you REALLY have money, you will probably be able to afford one of these babies in the AW14/15 Campaigns, but for now, these just here as a source of inspiration of what to look out for next season. From the beautiful squads from Diesel and DKNY, to the Fast Food-Chic from Moschino, these are the best of the Campaigns.

Fantasy Fashion

Annually at our school we have an event called Fantasy Fashion. In this, any student can take part in making a dress and modelling, with some pretty good prizes at the end. So as you can imagine, backstage at a fashion show must be hectic. However, unlike the dressing rooms of Prada and Chanel, we did not have manicurists, hairdressers and makeup artists, but a bunch messy-haired, self concious and creative teenagers. But when you have many 11-18 year olds sharing one very small space...well it pretty much speaks for itself. The judges were a buyer from Marks and Spencers, an Old student, founder of our school fashion magazine and Sam from 'Sam and the Whomps' (does "Bom Bom Bom" ring a bell?). We worked as individuals but enjoyed the event very much. Although we did not win, we still had great fun walking on stage with god-knows-how-high shoes and theatrical makeup. London Fashion Weekend Trend Show

This weekend we were lucky enough to visit London Fashion Weekend. Unfortunately, we were not rich enough or famous enough to go to London Fashion Week, but went to this weekend event where you could buy tickets, visit the stalls and buy some products, as well as seeing a show. We managed to get tickets for the Trends show where we watched 3 sections- Sergeant Indigo (Military with a pop of colour), Kitchen Chic (60's style) and finally, Brocade (Dark lace and embellishment- it speaks for itself). We managed to sit in the front row (YES!) and got some good pictures of the event, enjoy!
